Pumpkin Inquiry….

The students of Room 108 have been exploring pumpkins and will continue to explore pumpkins for the next few weeks. We will be incorporating Math (Exploring Shapes/Measurement), Literacy (P is for Pumpkin), Science (exploring the 5 senses and living things) and Art (Creating pumpkins for Halloween) throughout our inquiry.

What were the students of Room 108 saying about pumpkins:

“The pumpkin rolls but stops”

The pumpkin stops rolling on the flat part”

“It is hard on the outside”

“It is slimy on the inside and has seeds”

“We carve pumpkins”

“We eat the seeds”

Math Centres:

We have been introducing various math centres with the students that involve counting, number order and one-to-one correspondence. Using dot plates we have been exploring the different colours of the dots, how many of each colour there are, and how much dots in total (addition).

Measurement:

Using Link Cubes the students were exploring non-standard measurement and measuring items in the class.

Science Centre:

In our science centre, the students of Room 108 have been exploring items that float and exploring air and water.

Incorporating Technology for Math and Literacy:

The students of Room 108 have been using the SmartBoard to read online books for measurement. Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni was used to introduce measurement strand (math) as students were able to compare an inchworm (literacy: letter of the week, I i) to the various animals/items within the story and were encouraged to use words such as tall/big/small/wide etc…
