Exploring Shapes

Today, we continued our exploration of the various shapes. We read a story with no words and pinpointed all of the shapes in the picture to come to the realization that shapes are everywhere. The students enjoyed discussing what shapes were in the picture. Show the students the pictures and have them review the types of shapes.

Our follow-up activity was on the SmartBoard where we would look at pictures of house and the students would identify and group the different types of shapes.

In centres, the students had the opportunity to create their own pictures and describe what shapes they used. Check out what they created!

What can you do at home? Have the student go on a scavenger hunt and find the various shapes (triangles, rectangles, squares, circles)

Using technology during centres. The students of Room 108 are enjoying going on ABC Ya and playing letter matching games (please look in resources section for link). If you are able to, have the student show you how to play the game and sound out the letter and match them!

Remembrance Day Activity: Creating our Wreath

The students of Room 108 have been discussing why we wear the poppy and it’s significance. Take this opportunity to ask your child questions about Remembrance Day and have them discuss what it means to them. We discussed the meaning of the Poppy, Peace and why it is important to remember those who fought for Peace. We created a Remembrance Day Wreath covered in Poppies, check out our process.

Home Activity:

The poem “Little Poppy” is in the Activity folder with an activity helping the student identify the letter P (continuation of Letter of the Week, P p).

Math: Shapes, Shapes, Shapes!

Today, the students of Room 108 explored 2D shapes. We discussed:
-the number of sides
-the name of the shapes
-comparing shapes
-shape characteristics (E.g. circles can roll)

We then read a story that used shapes to create an image of a monkey and a cat. We discussed how shapes can create anything.

In the follow up activity, the students of Room 108 used cut-out shapes to create their own images and would describe what they had created.

Activity at home: Have your child explore their surrounding by picking out shapes at home or in the community, ask them how many sides it has.

Incorporating Math during Outdoor Play

During outdoor play the students of Room 108 used leaves to create big and small piles. We explored using the math words “more” and “less” while understanding that the more leaves we collected the bigger the pile would be. When the wind came, the students would protect the pile so that it would not get smaller. They enjoyed watching the pile get bigger and collecting the leaves.

Literacy Centres:

Our letter of the week is P, and this week the students will begin working/learning and discussing shapes. The following activity incorporates both literacy and math.

Reading/Writing Centres:

The SK’s have begun Reading/Writing Groups, every week the students will group and read a story together. They will have an appropriate response to the story that will assist them in both printing, reading and phonemic awareness.
